Diazot oxide (N2O) (nitric oxide, nitrous oxide) is a chemical compound that has been widely used in the food industry, medicine, the automotive industry, and even in the field of entertainment. At the same time, its small concentrations are not dangerous to humans, but can cause slight intoxication and drowsiness. It is stored in cylinders for nitrous oxide in a liquefied state, under excess pressure up to 15.0 MPa.
Characteristics of nitrous oxide tanks
The properties of this colorless, sweet-tasting gas are very diverse and unusual. Nitrous oxide is a heavy, non-combustible gas that dissolves well in water.
The synthesized substance of nitrous oxide exists in two forms:
- food – with a high degree of purification, used in medicine for anesthesia, in the food industry as a preservative;
- technical – with the presence of impurities, used as an oxidizing agent for rocket engines, enhances the power of the internal combustion engine in cars.
Nitric oxide storage cylinders are made of carbon and alloy steel and vary in weight and size. The most common containers are volumes of 2, 5 and 10 liters, because the small size is convenient and mobile in the conditions of, for example, ambulance. According to the requirements of GOST, the parameters and specifications of gas tanks are clearly regulated. Cylinders with nitrous oxide are painted in gray color and marked with the inscription in black color “NITROGEN ACID.”
Safe storage of cylinders
Nitrous oxide is non-toxic and non-explosive, but as a result of damage, sudden depressurization and explosion can occur, and fragments will cause serious injuries. Therefore, when storing gas cylinders, safety measures must be observed:
- ensure that the distance from the radiators is at least 1 meter;
- Protect from direct sunlight and precipitation;
- Avoid mechanical damage to the case and fall, since any deformation of the case violates the tightness.
When using cylinders, gas should not be completely consumed; the residual pressure should be at least 0.05 MPa. The maximum shelf life of nitrous oxide is 5 years.

Transporting nitrous oxide tanks

When transporting small batches without special equipment, the cylinders should be in an upright position and separated from each other by gaskets to avoid shock and friction.
